About Somatic Psychotherapy
Movement / Somatic or body based Psychotherapy is when the therapist works somatically with both the mind and body. It is often an untapped resource in personal development and psychotherapy. The stories told through our bodies are sometimes more meaningful and insightful than just talking alone.
Working with both mind and body can creatively further emotional, cognitive, physical and social integration, strengthening the mind-body connection through physical movements to improve both mental and physical well-being.
Movement styles and body language are related to how we are feeling. The therapist encourages the participant’s movements, exploring the development of new movement patterns together with emotional experiences. In a session, this might look like relaxation techniques to support your nervous system, gentle pressure and touch, self touch or exploring feelings, thoughts or trauma through the body.
