Getting Your Hands in the Earth!
There is something really satisfying about working with the soil and growing food for your local community. It’s an opportunity to connect with nature and connect with others, while seeing your efforts transform into amazing vegetables.
Volunteers are vital to help our small organic farm survive. Regular tasks include managing compost, preparing beds, seed sowing, pricking out and planting out seedlings, watering, weeding (there’s always weeding!), harvesting, processing and packing produce.
We are a happy and supportive bunch – you will be guided through every task so no previous experience is needed, only enthusiasm for organic growing!
What to expect when volunteering
- We have fully flexible farm volunteering hours on weekdays.
- There will always be free tea and coffee but please bring your own snack for breaktime. You can also enjoy a treat from the café, where volunteers enjoy a 10% discount on food and 50% off on hot drinks.
- Appropriate footwear – Farm sites can be messy, the ground can be uneven and you’ll be using tools such as spades or forks. Sturdy shoes are important, so no open toes and no heels please. We do have a range of wellies which you could borrow if we have your size– please get in touch about this.
- Tools will be provided by us – You are welcome to bring your own gloves or small tools such as secateurs if you wish.
- Be prepared for all weather:
- Wear enough layers, waterproof shoes and clothing if it is cold or raining. We do have some wellies and waterproofs – message us beforehand to check for your size.
- Wear a hat, sunglasses and sun cream if it is hot. Bring a water bottle – you can refill on site.
- Some tasks will be physically demanding, such as digging, moving wheelbarrows or carrying heavier items. Please do not partake in activities that may cause injury and only carry out tasks that are appropriate to your fitness level. Consequently, we have a limited variety of tasks for people with physical disabilities. However there are other ways in which you can support the farm, such as through help with social media or admin. Whatever you’d like to do, please fill out the form to get in touch.
- There are toilets and hand-washing facilities on site.
- We ask that volunteers do not bring children or pets to volunteering sessions unless stated otherwise.
