What do you do at The Fold?
I am front of house manager for The Fold Cafe. I look after the day to day running of the cafe, making sure customers feel welcome and looked after, serving up delicious organic coffee and plates of vibrant healthy food. We also host various functions, events and private parties.
How long have you been at The Fold?
I started working at The Fold in the summer of 2015. Mostly working in the cafe but with a couple of years in between working with the office team, looking after the events and marketing side of The Fold. Office work did not come naturally to me, but I learnt a lot!
What do you like most about working at The Fold?
I think my two favourite things are the beautiful buildings and surroundings that I get to work in every day, and my awesome team of staff who work very hard but also like to have a laugh and be silly (very important!) Oh, and getting to make and drink awesome coffee all day! (OK, so 3 things!)
What is your favourite memory from your time at The Fold?
Many to pick from, but one that sticks out was at the end of Earth Day 2016 – it had been a long, hard (but fun!) day and a lot of work had gone into it. After we’d finally cleaned down everything and packed away, the guys from the house and farm came into the cafe cheering and banging pots and pans and, despite the exhaustion, everyone erupted into crazy dancing and chanting and it just lifted everyone and made everybody laugh. That always stuck with me and brings a smile to my face.
What’s your sustainable living tip?
Try growing your own veg – it’s a big learning curve and it doesn’t always go to plan, but it’s real fun and you get a lot of satisfaction from it. Even if you don’t have an allotment or big garden, just start with a few potted plants or herbs.
When you are not at The Fold what do you enjoy doing?
Cycling, long walks, festivals, exploring, learning about and tending to my allotment, reading, binge watching gritty crime dramas, partying, and just good old chilling out! (perhaps I’ve had too much of this during lockdown!)
If you were to do any other role at The Fold what would you do and why?
I think it would have to be working with the farm team. I love being outside, in nature, getting my hands dirty. There’s a real satisfaction from watching stuff grow. However, I think I’d really struggle with the early starts (I’m not the best morning person!) and I have a lot of respect for the long, cold and wet days the farm team put in over winter – it makes me glad to be in the warm holding a cup of coffee!
