Debate! Discuss! Decide! Following on from June's hugely succesful first Café Philosophique evening, we give you this year's second on Thursday 11th September.
Tickets are £12 and include sweet & savoury snacks. Hot, cold and alcoholic drinks available for purchase. Evening runs from 6.30pm to 9.30pm
What is a 'Café Philosophique'?
Cafés philosophiques were started in the 1950s by French intellectuals, such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, who used to meet regularly in Paris cafés to talk and debate. Since the 1980s they have sprung up in cities across Europe, though there are currently only a handful in the UK.
Now, French philosopher Roxane Loiseaux has decided to set one up locally. Roxane took part in several cafés philosophiques as a student and has run them on a regular basis in Bristol at The Pierian Centre since 2004. She is keen to share her interest in philosophy which, she says, can help people develop a positive and thoughtful approach to life.
This session's topic: Seneca
"There is nothing in the world so much admired as a man who knows how to bear unhappiness with courage."
Seneca was a Stoic philosopher, of the latest generation, but with a somewhat pragmatic bent. At the heart of his philosophy was the belief in a simple life devoted to virtue and reason. His style is mostly to administer advice rather than impart philosophical wisdom!
At a time when a lot of books are published about how to embrace our dark and light sides and how to accept what life has to offer, whether good or bad, revisiting Seneca's philosophy feels paradoxically fresh and familiar.
His reflection on how to reach happiness in the midst of threats and exile witnesses the art that he develops in overcoming suffering: through reason and rhetoric, or the ability to use language effectively, he creates his own practical guide to deal with odds.
The evening will also include a delicious selection of sweet & savoury snacks, to help the discussions along! Hot, cold and alcoholic drinks will be available for purchase.
The evening is suitable for anybody with an enquiring mind who enjoys stimulating conversation and good company!
